The Bonds Between Us
Students caring for the future
Norris Vivatrat, a junior who plans to be a physician and treat kids with cancer, last summer was a camp counselor for terminally ill children. When a letter came recently informing him one child had died, he says: “It made me stop and think. A lot of people have a lot of problems, and here we are just working toward our own ends. We’ve got to stop and remember, it’s not the end of the world if you fail your test. We have so much work, you lose your perspective.”
Students are the future of the world, young people who tomorrow will be leaders in government, business, communications, aerospace, energy, and finance. Students say there is a lot that’s great about the world today, but their wish for us all tomorrow is that we live in a more caring, compassionate world where people care more about each other and care more about the earth. While students say they are gaining great technical skills at MIT, they also say they long for more connection to others and for a sense of working together to achieve something greater than themselves.
